Abstract

The Islamic endowment (waqf) has had a great impact on reviving the Muslim Community (Ummah) and its civilization throughout Islamic eras, foremost among which is the scholarly endowment (al- waqf al-ilmi), which contributed to the revivalism of knowledge and academics. Muslim women have contributed to these Islamic duties being included in Islamic discourse, as a vital part in preaching Islam and spreading knowledge. Accordingly, women had essential contributions to the Islamic endowment, such as building mosques, schools and libraries, spending on students, and also encouraging men from their families to do so. The research aims to reveal some of the women’s contributions in the donation of their funds to serve knowledge, as well as managing this endowment by highlighting women models at different eras and from different places. This research utilizes the inductive desk approach in collecting and analyzing the material. The outline of research begins with a preface on the meaning and legitimacy of endowment followed by three chapters and a conclusion: women’s contribution to the endowment of mosques, schools,libraries and then the conclusion. One of the significant findings of the research is that women experience in the charitable endowment was clear, by disbursing their ornaments from their marriage gifts for the acquisition of endowments to sponsor and support students. After the movement of endowment for mosques was begun and extended to the books of primary education for memorizing the Holy Quran, the idea of libraries attached to mosques followed. It is noted that most donating women were mothers, wives or daughters of kings, caliphs, princes and well-off scholars, as endowment is linked to material capability. Women’s contribution to endowment had a great impact on the independence of scholars and judges, and their freedom of relocation and authorship which is a hallmark of Islamic civilization.
